Connect engineering change, component supply and RMA with SAP Business One for U.S. High-Tech Operations

U.S. electronics teams use SAP Business One to connect engineering-controlled items, long-lead components, contract manufacturing, serial traceability and RMA service. The operating record follows a unit from supplier receipt through build, shipment and warranty without relying on separate spreadsheets.

The high-tech operating gaps that turn a component issue into a customer issue

Serial history stops at the company boundary
Supplier lots, contract-manufacturer records, internal build serials and customer shipments use different identifiersCost:RMA containment and root-cause analysis start with manual data collection
Long-lead supply and engineering change collide
A BOM revision lands after components have been ordered or allocated, with no single view of affected demand and alternatesCost:Excess components, premium freight and delayed launches
Contract manufacturing cost is incomplete
Components, outside processing, test, freight and duty are recorded in different systems or periodsCost:Unit economics and customer quotes use incomplete cost
Warranty and RMA are detached from shipment
Service staff cannot move directly from the returned serial number to customer, build history, warranty terms and replacement partsCost:Slow response and repeated investigation
Core Module · End-to-end Business Flow

Engineering release → supply → build → shipment → RMA

The design connects an approved product structure to component purchasing, kit readiness, internal or outsourced build, unit-level shipment and service history. Each system handoff has a named owner and reconciliation rule.

SAP Business One manages batch and serial transactions across receipt, production, delivery and service. MTC adds the approval and integration design that connects engineering change, BOM release and MRP; the service module then links customer equipment, contract coverage, calls and consumed parts to the shipped unit.

Our approach · High-tech digitalization ladder

Create product genealogy first, then improve readiness and service economics

Start by controlling which product definition was built and which components entered each unit. Once that record is dependable, planners can manage long-lead exposure and service teams can use the same history for RMA and renewal work.

Released product structure and serial genealogy

Doing:Tie approved engineering changes to the production BOM, then capture supplier lot or serial, build completion and customer shipment in one controlled genealogy.

Long-lead readiness and unit cost connected

Doing:Use MRP to surface component gaps and approved alternates, while material, contract-manufacturing, test, freight and duty costs accumulate against the relevant build or unit.

FAQ

Questions U.S. electronics teams ask before selecting ERP

How do we keep an ECN from creating obsolete purchase commitments?
The blueprint defines the approval state that releases a BOM to planning. When an approved change affects open supply or demand, MRP is rerun and the planner reviews existing POs, alternates and affected production orders instead of treating the BOM edit as an isolated engineering event.
Can serial scanning work with a contract manufacturer or 3PL?
Yes, if the interface contract specifies who creates the serial, which events must be returned and how errors are reconciled. MTC can use API or controlled file integration, but the project must test duplicate, missing and rejected serial transactions before go-live.
Can the ERP connect a returned device to warranty, build and service cost?
SAP Business One can link a customer equipment record and service call to the serial number, contract coverage, shipment and parts issue. MTC configures the RMA handoff so service history and cost do not remain in a separate ticketing spreadsheet.

Test one product’s genealogy from supplier to RMA

Bring one representative product, its current BOM change process and a recent return. MTC USA will map which identifiers and handoffs must be controlled before discussing software scope.

  • ECN, BOM, supply and build ownership mapped together
  • Contract manufacturer and 3PL handoffs included
  • Warranty, parts and RMA history traced to the shipped serial
